Tour overview

A two week safari following the elephant trail through Kenya’s southeastern route, visiting Amboseli, Tsavo West, Taita Hills and Tsavo East. This route makes a wonderful safari tour with beautiful landscapes and plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities that winds it ways through the southern wilderness towards the Swahili coastline. The safari will end at the coast, for a stay at Chale Island, which is a wonderful resort on one of Kenya’s best beaches.

Day 1 Sight-seeing in Nairobi

The day’s first stop will be the elephant orphanage, where you can meet the many young elephants who are being rehabilitated for release back into the wild. You will then head to the Karen Blixen Coffee house for lunch, located in an historic building originally built in 1906. This will be followed by a short visit to the Karen Blixen Museum, originally the centerpiece of a 4,500-acre farm owned by author Karen Blixen made famous by the 1985 film ‘Out of Africa’. Finally, you’ll head over to the Giraffe Centre to meet and feed the giraffes, the centre is a breeding programme for the now rare Rothschild giraffe, which can only be found in small numbers in the wild. At the end of the day you’ll head to camp for dinner and where you’ll be spending the night. The camp has a selection of cottages and luxury tents, there is a pool, games room, very good souvenir shop with all items made locally and is all set in a very attractive site with lots of trees and bird-life.

Day 2-3 Kilimanjaro and the Elephants of Amboseli

Depart Nairobi for Amboseli, a fantastic park with great views of Mount Kilimanjaro and is one of the best places in Africa to encounter large herds of elephants up close! Amboseli has several habitat types ranging from savannahs to wetlands and you can find over 600 species of birds, big cats and many other species of mammals including all the Big Five! You’ll arrive in time for lunch at Kibo, a very nice tented camp, each spacious tent has a double or twin beds, a fully equipped en suite bathroom and small veranda where you can relax. The camp has a large dining area, bar, swimming pool to cool off, a small art gallery and souvenir shop. Late afternoon you’ll head out into Amboseli for a game drive to explore the park, you’ll also stop off at Mzima springs for a short nature walk where you can see hippos and many species of bird. The next day will be spent on game drives exploring Amboseli with all meals in camp.

Day 4-5 Wilderness of Tsavo

Wake up early for a game drive and watch the sunrise over the imposing Kilimanjaro, then head back to camp for breakfast before heading to Tsavo West. You’ll be staying at the stunning Serena Kilaguni Safari Lodge situated inside the park, a game-viewing lodge over-looking its own watering hole that can have daily visits from elephants and many other plains mammals. Each room is en-suite with a balcony either overlooking the rolling hills or the watering hole, the lodge also has a pool, small shop, restaurant and bar and there is a spa if you fancy a massage after your game drives. In the afternoon you’ll head out on game drive and visit the Mzima Springs where you can see hippos and Nile crocodiles and many different bird species. You’ll return to Kilaguni for dinner and spend your evening relaxing and watching the wildlife arrive at the watering hole overlooked by the lodge’s restaurant. The next day will be spent exploring Tsavo on game drives with all meals at the lodge.

Day 6 The scenic sanctuary of Taita Hills

After breakfast you will depart Kilaguni and head for the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, a very scenic area with abundant wildlife. There are more than fifty species of large mammals and three hundred species of birds here and it’s not uncommon to spot two dozen species in a morning game drive. You can find lions, cheetahs, large herds of elephant and buffalo as well as many other interesting species! You’ll arrive in time for lunch at the Sarova Salt Lick, an unusual game viewing lodge, set on stilts overlooking a water source which attracts a lot of wildlife, which can be viewed from the comfort of the lodge, your room or from the excellent ground-level hide. Later on, you’ll be taken out by your driver for a game drive in this very scenic park that covers over 28,000 acres of protected area before heading back to the lodge for dinner.

Day 7-8 Enter the semi-arid scrublands of Tsavo East

After breakfast and a game drive, you’ll leave Taita for Tsavo East; a plateau of open grassland with giant baobab trees that is the largest protected area in Kenya at over 13,500 sq km. This huge park is home to many of the larger mammals, including elephant, rhino and lion. You’ll arrive in time for lunch at the remotely located Satao camp, which enjoys a unique setting overlooking a watering hole which attracts in many animals for their daily drink and is one of the best places to see large herds of elephants. You’ll have some time to relax and take in the surroundings and views before heading out on an afternoon game drive to explore the park with your guide. Other attractions here include the Lugards Falls on the Galana river and also Mudanda Rock, a large, prominent, towering rock formation that attracts elephants and other wildlife including leopard. You will spend two days here on game drives exploring this biodiversity stronghold!

Day 9-13 Relax on the white sands and in the warm blue waters of the Indian Ocean

You’ll fly to Diani, where you’ll be transferred to Chale Island, set on a small island just off the shores of Diani, and has a beautiful coral sandy bay that is one of the best, truly private beaches Kenya has to offer and due to the seclusion and lack of seaweed, turtles often lay eggs in the bay. The Island is mostly covered with an indigenous ancient forest and there is also an inland tidal mangrove lake. The resort has three swimming pools, one is a fresh water pool, connected by a small waterfall to a large Jacuzzi. There is also a salt-water swimming pool that connects to the sea at high tide. There is also a spa, two small boutique shops, restaurant, bar and lounge areas and for the more adventurous there is a scuba diving centre based on the island. Other activities include: beach snorkeling, boat snorkeling, glass bottom boat trips, sea kayaking, game fishing and local catamaran sailing. Excursions to the Wasini marine reserve for dolphin spotting can also be arranged.

Day 14 Transfer to Nairobi
